The nominations are in...

Here are the nominations for the Oscars, just announced today. Notice the unusually large field for Best Picture. This is the first year to have ten nominees instead of five, so we'll see if this actualy allows a truly good film to get the win.

I hear they increased the nominees to 10 to try and increase box office revenues (the movie industry has been struggling for quite some time). I'm torn re: whether or not it's a good idea. There are some good choices in there though! Up in the Air, Up, Hurt Locker.

Whatever the reason I am totally on board. Some may argue that this waters down the category, but I disagree. I feel that in any given year there are no more than 10 really good, Oscar-worthy, movies but there are usually more than 5. This allows all the good movies to make it into this category to compete for a chance to win. It takes the politics out of the nomination process and puts it in the actual awarding where it belongs.
